lately, i have been rereading tracy kidder's mountains beyond mountains, the story of dr. paul farmer and partners in health, the international public health organization that he started in haiti. the country seems so little on our radar these days; in the turmoil over aristide's ouster and the floods that hit not long afterward, news of farmer's work, and of conditions on the ground, has been scarce.

check out the photoessay on the front (web)page of the nyt today, then go read statements from and about operations at zanmi lasante. at the bottom of the more recent page (flood-related) is a link to farmer's letter during aristide's ouster. it is heartbreaking, especially when viewed next to the news we have(n't) been getting here in the US.
