he was 19 and had never had any trouble with the law. he was heading for a party and decided to use a rooftop shortcut. he was unarmed. the officer was patrolling with his gun drawn, for no apparent reason. when they opened the same door from two directions, the officer shot him and he died. the officer will not be indicted on charges of criminally negligent homicide.

grand juries regularly charge folks who have left their guns in their homes with criminally negligent homicide (as they should) when others (often their own children) accidentally maim or kill.

i'm not sure it serves much purpose to indict this officer. he's clearly sorry about what happened. on the other hand, i'm not convinced that he shouldn't be made a whole lot sorrier.
