alright...back to the normal fare. with a little note to the effect of, wow, is it ever strange to be writing about regular old life. blech.
talked briefly with kat at lunch about pro-choice task force, escorting, and our need to do something activist about bush's derailment of UN family planning monies. the bastard. a few weeks (?) ago, emily clough emailed an article on the possible effects of this decision: the hunger, the women dead in childbirth, the orphans and the infant mortality. you have to wonder about the soul of a person who's willing to sell out the neediest people in the world in order to get in good with the "christian" right and its money.
obviously, the one-child policy is inhumane. i don't think anyone's arguing about that. but there are already prohibitions on using US funds to support abortions overseas. fine. (personally, i think that's ridiculous as well, but...whatever.) my understanding of this particular fiasco is that there were "concerns" that the money might possibly be channeled in a way that was supportive of abortion in some way. nothing concrete, just the irrational fear that somewhere someone in a terrible situation might possibly be offered a safe and sane reproductive choice.
being a christian myself, and having thought about this for ages and ages, i feel really compelled to do something about these people. "these people" who are dying around the world; "these people" who are causing it because they think they're privy to the mind of God. interesting that the second group exists largely in the united states.
